公司于1994年2月18日成立，并于1994年6月17日在深圳证券交易所上市。2016年5月20日，公司名称变更为“宁夏西部创业实业股份有限公司”，证券简称“西部创业”。公司从事的主要业务包括铁路运输和供应链贸易服务业务。公司铁路运输业务的服务对象为宁夏宁东能源化工基地并辐射周边，主要运输货物为煤炭，基本形成具备3大外运出口的“半环形”铁路网，担负着宁东能源化工基地煤炭、油品、化工物资等工业原料和产品的运输重任。公司铁路运输业务收入主要来源于运费、杂费、代维代管费。供应链贸易服务。公司供应链贸易业务以铁路运输为依托，充分利用自身优势为上下游客户提供采购、运输、仓储、销售、信息等服务。公司旗下拥有宁夏宁东铁路有限公司、宁夏西创运通供应链有限公司、广夏(银川)贺兰山葡萄酒庄有限公司、宁夏大古物流有限公司4个全资子公司，主要从事铁路开发建设运营、供应链管理服务与现代物流以及葡萄酒、资产管理等业务。
